Nigeria can still attain self-sufficiency in rice production, according to Nigeria’s Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture predicted Nigeria’s rice imports will increase by 13% this year to 3.4 million metric tons, making it the world’s biggest rice importer after China.
The vice president said local rice is still more expensive than imported rice but could be more competitive with imported grains in terms of pricing if local producers could mill their own rice. He also cited how other countries normally subsidized their rice to make it less expensive.
