The dredging of a 3-km canal will supply 4,000 ha of rice fields in Koh Thkov commune, Cholkiri District with water from the Tonle Sap Lake.
The Provincial Department of Water Resources and Meteorology in Kampong Chhnang reported completing 80% of the canal rehabilitation. Once completed, farmers in Cholkiri are expected to receive sufficient water during the dry season.
Rice farming is the biggest component of the county’s agriculture sector and employs about 3 million workers. In the last decade, climate change has affected the water supply to many of Cambodia’s agricultural areas.
