The North East region of India presents an excellent opportunity to utilize vast tracts of rice fields for rice-fish farming.
Studies in Assam have shown that rice-fish cultivation is a viable economic activity that is environmentally friendly, low-cost, and low-risk with multiple benefits including increased income and increased fish availability for the rural farming community. Grain yield in rice-fish cultivation is also higher than in monocropping according to other studies.
Thus rice-fish farming could enhance farm production, reduce environmental degradation, and improve the quality of life of farmers.
