A study conducted by the African Agricultural Technology Foundation showed that Africa’s rice farmers face numerous challenges including the lack of high-quality seeds, farm machinery, and money to procure agricultural inputs. The impact of climate change such as droughts and soil salinity were also forcing many farmers to abandon rice farming.
However, the report also noted that African farmers were beginning to innovate and increase their productivity and there was an emerging trend of youth increasingly taking up roles in rice farming in some countries.
