Some families are abandoning rice farming in Prey Veng, one of Cambodia’s biggest rice-producing provinces, to invest in aquaculture because of prolonged droughts and low market prices.
One farmer who switched to aquaculture more than 10 years, when growing rice proved unlucrative, reported earning around USD 1,000 a month selling to the local markets.
Cambodian officials are pushing aquaculture as a viable alternative to rice farming stating that the export potential of fish to the Chinese market is “high.”
