The largest single threat to food security is high temperature due to climate change, according to Donald Ort, a professor of plant biology and crop sciences at the University of Illinois.
In a study, each centigrade degree rise of temperature was shown to lower production in corn (more than 7%), wheat (6%), rice (3.2%), and soybeans (3%).
Dr. North leads Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency, a project that aims to enhance photosynthesis in food crops under warmer climate conditions. The project focuses on boosting the efficiency of the enzyme Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase which converts carbon dioxide into organic carbon.
