A study by researchers at Texas-based Rice University showed that biochar can reduce the need for irrigation, especially for regions with sandy soils.
The study analyzed the relationship between biochar properties, application rates, and changes in the water-holding capacity of various soil types. Sandy soils combined with biochar create more pore space for water making them more efficient.
Biochar is produced through the high-temperature decomposition of biomass such as straw, wood, shells, grass, and other materials and is used to improve soil and agricultural productivity.
