The Saline-Alkali Tolerant Rice Research and Development Center has started testing 300 new high-yielding salt-tolerant rice varieties that can be potentially grown on about 20 million hectares of China’s salty-alkaline soils.
The center plans to identify seven rice varieties to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs for evaluation and all certified varieties will be promoted for large-scale cultivation nationwide.
Salt-tolerant varieties are expected to help safeguard food China’s food security by offsetting the impact of shrinking arable land areas and water resources.
