Colombia will have 60% less land suitable for rice production in about 30 years without significant global reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, according to the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture, and Food Security.
Increasing temperatures and decreasing rainfall are expected to make low-altitude rice-growing areas too hot or dry for irrigated rice. If cultivation continues in the same areas using the same seeds and agronomic practices, future yields could decrease or the current rice varieties will not be able to adapt.
