Heavy rains attributed to climate change caused floods early this year that disrupted agricultural activities and led to some crop losses in the autonomous state of Zanzibar in Tanzania.
The flooding reduced rice production to 46,500 tons down from 47,500 tons in 2018. Vegetable and fruit production also declined by 18% from last year.
Zanzibar needs at least 80,000 tons of rice annually to meet the needs of its population. The government is targeting a rice output of 50,000 tons every year, which means the country has to continue relying on imports.
