CRISPR-Cas technology can hasten the domestication of African landraces to make them more suitable for high- production agriculture, according to a study.
Although African landraces have superior resistance to endemic pests and tolerance to drought and nutrient deficiencies than modern Asian rice varieties, they also produce unpredictable yield and grain quality.
The study provides an example of how new breeding technologies can accelerate the development of highly productive African landrace rice varieties that could ensure the continent’s food security.
