India contributed almost USD one million to the United Nations World Food Programme in Zimbabwe to to assist more than 5,200 smallholder farmers in Chiredzi and Mangwe Districts. Working with WFP Zimbabwe, the funds will will provide expertise through its Smallholder Agricultural Market Support program, to strengthen the resilience and capacity of selected smallholder farmers.
The project will promote the cultivation of drought-tolerant small grains and legumes–reducing the negative effects of recurring droughts in Zimbabwe.
The contribution, provided through the India-UN Development Partnership Fund, highlights India’s growing contributions to the Global South on efforts towards strengthening resilience to climate change.

Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi furthered his vision of doubling farmers’ incomes with the inauguration of the IRRI South Asia Regional Centre (IRRI SARC) in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh today.
This research facility will strengthen the national research capacity of rice-growing countries in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Delivering advanced research, teaching and services to improve crop production, seed quality and the nutritional value of rice, the centre will also work with national partners to enhance farmers’ knowledge and income.
IRRI India, IRRI SARC, convene on Transforming Food Systems through Sustainable Value Chains
The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) South Asia Office in India convened a multi-sectoral panel discussion, “Creating Sustainable Value Chains for Transforming Food Systems, at the National Agricultural Science Complex in Delhi.
Senior representatives from agriculture, nutrition, environment, R&D, and policy deliberated on how to collaborate for operationalizing food system transformation in India and South Asia. The multi-disciplinary perspectives focused on a new paradigm of food systems transformation that is emerging in the context of ‘planetary boundaries’, and is defining the ‘safe operating space’ for imparting stability to earth systems and human health.
IRRI South Asia Regional Centre
The IRRI South Asia Regional Centre is a regional facility that supports research collaboration, training, and service provision to institutions, scientists, and other stakeholders from India and other South Asian and African nations.
International Rice Research Institute South Asia Regional Centre (ISARC), Varanasi has been established at the campus of the National Seed Research and Training Centre (NSRTC) located in Varanasi through a Memorandum of Understanding between the Department of Agriculture Cooperation and Farmers Welfare (DoACFW, Government of India) and IRRI, Philippines. ISARC is the first research center of IRRI to be established outside of its headquarters in Philippines.
