Many Nigerian smallholder farmers are enjoying higher yields, better-quality rice, and higher profits using modern rice planting and harvesting techniques.
By adopting land leveling, transplanting nursery-grown seedlings, and using superior seeds, farmers reported having doubled or tripled their profits.
Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, has increased its rice productivity by 55% but still imports rice to meet demand. Government efforts to attain self-sufficiency and improve the country’s food security depend on the productivity of small-scale farmers who account for more than 80% of rice cultivation.
