Nepal’s rice harvest this fiscal year reached an all-time high of 5.6 million tons, a 9% increase from the previous year, according to the country’s Ministry of Agricultural Development. The ministry reported Nepal’s rice productivity increased to 3.8 tons per hectare from 3.5 tons per hectare in 2017-18. The country’s average rice production is 3 tons per hectare. The country also expects wheat harvest to set a new record with projections of over 2 million tons.
The bumper crop is credited to better-than-expected rainfall this year.
The robust gain in its cereal crop production is expected to boost Nepal’s agriculture sector’s growth rate by more than 5% this fiscal year and is likely to significantly benefit the national economy.
