Researchers at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute have identified the cause of the rice disease observed mainly in Haryana and Punjab as the Southern Rice Black-Streaked Dwarf Virus
The viral disease causes dwarfing in rice plants and spreads through the white-backed plant hopper.
The virus was observed to infect as many as 12 rice varieties including basmati, non-basmati, and hybrid rice.
