The Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board will develop more long-grain rice varieties to meet the high demand of local consumers.
Most Rwandan farmers grow short-grain rice that thrives in wetlands with low temperatures but many consumers prefer long-grain rice. This has led to an increase in imported rice while local farmers struggle to sell their rice.
The board is currently testing three long-grained varieties Gwiza, Umutebo, and Cyuzuzo to help meet local demand, make local rice farming profitable, and curb imports.
