About 65% of rice farmers said they want their children to stay away from rice farming while only a third (35%) wanted their children to go into it, according to a survey of 923 farmers from three provinces in the Philippines.
In the study by Florencia Palis from the University of the Philippines Los Banos, Filipino rice farmers cited “physical, psychological and financial difficulties”, which they experienced, as the reasons for wanting their children to take non-agricultural jobs in the city or overseas.
The study recommended that the government and agricultural stakeholders to develop policies and strategies that will make rice farming occupations or businesses attractive.
