Tanzania launched a 12-year National Rice Development Strategy to develop and boost the country’s rice production and ensure food security in the region. Funded by the World Bank, Japan International Cooperation Agency, and Africa Development Bank, the program aims to increase Tanzania’s annual rice production from 2.2 million tons to 4.5 million tons.
In 2018, the demand for rice in Tanzania reached over 2 million tons and is expected to increase by 2.9% annually over the next five years. Rice production is also is a major source of livelihood for many farming households in the country.
The National Rice Development Strategy is part of the Coalition for African Rice Development, a consultative group of bilateral donors and regional and international organizations working in collaboration with rice-producing African countries.
