The Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario and the United States Department of Agriculture have approved a bacterial blight-resistant rice variety developed through gene editing.
Gene editing technology enables the rapid alterations in the DNA code as well as the precise targeting within genomes. In a sense, the technology is used to rewriting the DNA code.
Crops developed using gene editing are not transgenic and should be regulated as conventional plants, according to food safety officials.
