Vietnamese farmers are adopting new technologies that make rice farming more sustainable and environment-friendly.
Among these are alternate wetting and drying technology to reduce water use and cost-efficient application of fertilizers using drones.
The methods enable farmers to use 40% less rice seed and 30% less water, according to the Loc Troi Group, one of Vietnam’s largest rice exporters.

The cost efficiency of fertiliser application that uses drones depends on the costs of the technology compared to the costs of traditional application of fertilisers.
Intensification is cited as the main cause of landscape degradation (IPBES). Varieties that perform well in natural conditions should be promoted.
Some technologies are unnecessary additional costs. The world produces more than enough food, the problem is in distribution. Acquisition of new technology contracts the profit margin to the detriment of farmers. Besides not all farmers can afford to adopt new costly technologies.
